2016 Ford Transit
After years of tent camping, we were ready for something more comfortable, weatherproof, and convenient—so in the summer of 2024, we got this custom-built Ford Transit van. Camping in a rain- and wind-proof van has completely changed the way we experience the outdoors.American VanWorks took care of the flooring, walls, ceiling, fan, lights, and safari rack—while I installed wood shelving, a sink, and bed frames myself. The result is a fully-functional, family-friendly camper that’s surprisingly easy to drive and perfect for making memories.Features We Love• Sleeps 4: The van sleeps 2 adults and 2 kids under comfy duvets—ensuring everyone gets a restful night’s sleep after a day of outdoor fun. (Adults have the fold-out main bed and each kid gets their own sleeping platform and that fits over the seats.)• High Roof: Standing at 6'3", I can easily stand up inside with no hunching—making a huge difference when it comes to comfort and practicality.• Gear Storage: The safari rack on top and central aisle inside the van make it easy to store large items like surfboards, kayaks, or bikes.• Faucet & Sink: Perfect for washing dishes or rinsing off wet gear after a busy day of adventuring.• Cassette Toilet: When you’re off the grid and need a little convenience, this is a total lifesaver.• Reliable Power: Equipped with two battery power stations and solar panels for recharging—your devices, lights, and electronics will always have power, no matter where you go.• Refrigerator/Freezer: Keep food fresh without the hassle of ice or frequent trips to the store.• Driver Tech: The van has a back-up camera, touch screen, and Apple CarPlay, so you can safely navigate, stream music, and stay connected while on the road.
What's included• Outdoor rug
• Camp chairs
• Pillows and bedding for 4
• 4 cups, 4 plates, 4 bowls
• French press for coffee
• Coleman propane camp stove
• Pots and pans
• Cooking utensils
• S’mores skewers
• Hatchet
• Puzzles and games
• Bike rack (optional add-on)
• And other stuff - just ask, we’ve probably got it!RecommendationsFavorite local spots:
- Islay Creek Campground at Montana de Oro - campground is tucked away between mountain peaks and offers direct access to a beach and mountain trails, campsites are well-spaced, and it’s quiet :)
- Santa Margarita Lake - always has sites (because its a county park that few people visit)!
- Cerro Alto - perfect launch for the highest peak in SLO County, but watch out for the poison oak!Other things to note- The van is only 2WD, so NOT equipped for rugged 4WD adventures. Please don’t test the limits on this.
- Van does not have a nighttime heater or AC unit, just the daytime units that run when the engine is on. However, the van is well-insulated and there is a comfy electric blanket for cold nights.
- No smoking inside the van - please and thank you :)

We rented from Kevin because we wanted to spend a few days exploring the beautiful Morro Bay area. Kevin offered a generous mileage allowance for our 3 night trip but we enjoyed our time in his camper so much that we hardly traveled at all! Kevin and his wife were very thorough in their orientation at pick-up and their rig was immaculate. They were so kind and offered ideas and little extras to make our trip hassle -free. Kevin even offered to drive us to our local hotel after we returned the camper. My husband found it very easy to drive and park as well. I would rent from Kevin again in a heartbeat!
