The Great Outdoors

Stretch your legs and learn a lot about Kingston by joining the city's historic walking tours. There are around a dozen tours on offer. Most of the tours are easily walkable, lasting less than an hour. Along the way, you'll see some of Kingston's most architecturally significant buildings and homes. Amble through the old business district, or snap photos of the beautifully preserved collection of buildings from 1812. Some of the tour options include the Portsmouth Village walking tour, the Tett Centre tour, and Sir John A.'s Footsteps tour. Some tours are self-guided while others feature downloadable audio guides.

Kingston also has over 200 parks where you can go for a stroll, walk your furry friend, and have a picnic with friends and family. Some of the parks even have RV camping sites. One of the biggest parks worth checking out it Lake Ontario Park. This park is home to a huge waterfront that features a splash pad, playground, cobble beach, and pathways for walks and hikes around the waterfront. If you're visiting in winter, hit the supervised ice skating rinks at City Park.

Finally, scenic cruises of the Thousand Islands are one of the most popular attractions in Kingston. Choose your tour, board the ship which departs from downtown Kingston, and expect to spend three hours experiencing the Thousand Islands from a unique perspective complete with live music, entertainment, and fine dining.

Exploring the City

If this is your first time in Kingston and you want to visit as many attractions as possible, check to see if a K-Pass is available. This seasonal, all-inclusive pass grants you access to museums, city tours, and even the cruises we mentioned earlier. The pass will grant you admission to Fort Henry, which is a fortress built to protect the royalty of Kingston during the War of 1812 and was later reopened as a museum. You also get to visit The Murney Tower, which is one of the oldest museums in town showcasing multiple military exhibits.

The Kingston Penitentiary was the oldest maximum-security prison in the country until it shut its doors in 2013. Now open to the public, this iconic attraction once imprisoned Canada's most nefarious criminals, including serial killers. Charles Dickens and Ernest Hemingway both visited the prison and wrote about their experiences. Today, you can tour the penitentiary and see the prison cells, solitary confinement sector, and the gymnasium.

If you get tired of all of the history lessons and tours, you might want to have some indoor fun. In Kingston, you'll find awesome escape room experiences where you can play detective, solve puzzles, and figure out how to escape. For those who love video games, there's a place where you can enjoy a wide variety of virtual reality experiences. This will be a treat for the kids and adults alike.

Once you get hungry and feel like treating yourself, head to Queen Street, where you'll find a large concentration of restaurants. Choose from a variety of cuisines, like Greek, Asian, Chinese, Vietnamese, vegan, burger joints, and many more. If you need gas for your Kingston motorhome rental, or if you need some general supplies, both stores and gas stations can be found all throughout the city.
