Keeping Your Pets Safe in the RV When You are Away

Keeping Your Pets Safe in the RV When You are Away

One of the greatest things about traveling in an RV is that you no longer have to leave your fur kids at home while you travel around the country. It definitely makes it easier to bring your dogs, cats, or in our case, our pet silkie chicken named Brienne of Tarth, everywhere you go.

But, RV pet safety is important to remember when camping with pets, especially when you are leaving them unattended.

If you are planning on doing some exploring or plan on being gone from the RV for any long period of time, there are several things you want to keep in mind to make sure your pets are well taken care of.

It is also important to note that in a lot of RV parks and resorts, they have rules against leaving your dog alone in your RV. You’ll definitely want to make sure you follow the rules of the park, as you can be asked to leave if you violate them.

Preparing for unpredictable weather

Another thing you’ll want to keep a close eye on is the weather.  When you wake up in the morning, it might be nice and cool and breezy, but it could turn into a blistering hot day that cooks your rig.

While leaving your windows open to allow that breeze to come through works at first, even on a breezy day, it can get unbearably hot inside an RV. You also run the risk of a sudden storm popping up and rain getting in through your windows.

The next logical idea would be to close up the windows and turn on the air conditioning. Generally, this is the best option because you know the temperature will stay comfortable and you don’t have to worry about the rain.

While this seems perfect, we’ve read enough horror stories about pet owners coming back to their RV only to find out that their air conditioner quit or the electric cut out and they have to face the horror of losing a loved one.

Monitoring your RV from your phone

Because of this, we searched high and low to find a system that would help keep our kids safe while we were out exploring and we finally settled on the Canary monitoring system.

The Canary had everything we were looking for including a camera we can view remotely as well as monitors for temperature, humidity, and air quality.

Our favorite feature is that we can set thresholds to get alerts on our phones when the temperature, humidity, or air quality gets too high.  If it got too hot in the RV, we would get an alert and would be able to rush back home to sort things out.

Plus, being able to pull up the live feed to check on everyone, give us great peace of mind.

We also subscribed to their service, which allows us to speak through the device to help reassure the fur kids while we are away (or to tell them to get off the counters!)

There is also a motion sensor, which records directly to the cloud in the instance someone were to break into our home. You can quickly press the alarm button, which sends a piercing sound through the air, in case someone were to break in.

There are many systems like this available on the market, but we chose the Canary because it gave us the most reassurance that everyone will be safe and sound when we got home.

Now that you know how to keep your loved ones safe, find the perfect RV for your next adventure with your pets by renting an RV through Outdoorsy.

We are Hayden and Aaron Hall and we sold everything we owned to travel the US in an RV. Our goals are to visit every state and every National Park in the U.S. before we travel Internationally to visit every country in the world. We love to highlight amazing outdoor adventures as well as delicious vegan food that we find on our travels.
